THE NUTFIELD ROAD RACE

To the best of our knowledge, the Village Road Race has been run every year since 1977 when it was revived as part of the Silver Jubilee celebrations. It was run on Saturday 28th May, starting at 11.00 and the course was Mid Street, Crab Hill Lane, Moats Lane, Coopers Hill Road, Nutfield High Street and Mid Street, starting and ending as now at the Station Hotel.

Nowadays the event is extremely well organised and is run on Easter Monday. It includes a Seniors handicap race, a Junior race and a Walk around the 5 mile course. Villagers can enter as individuals as well as part of a team. The Junior race was 3 miles when it first started, but has now been cut-down to half a mile.

In 1977, Gerry Gowling, the publican of the Station Hotel, presented a cup to the winner and a bottle of Jubilee strong ale to every participant. Gerry also put a photo on display in the Saloon Bar of the competitors from when it was last run in about 1904.

If you have any photos or details of previous events you'd like to share with the village, please pass them to Rebecca or Pat at the usual address - all will be returned unharmed!
